As winter brings its unpredictable weather to Wisconsin, snow- and ice-covered parking lots and sidewalks can lead to slips and falls. Responsible business owners must take proper steps so they do not find themselves facing a lawsuit for a slip and fall accident. Homeowners can also benefit from the following tips to ensure everyone's safety.

Proper snow removal is critical to avoid snow and ice hazards. Generally, falling snow needs to be cleared intermittently once it begins falling. Shoveling can't wait until it piles up. Parking lots and sidewalks should be cleared a final time after the snow stops falling.

Parking lots and streets need to have proper drainage so rainwater and melted snow cannot pool on them and form icy patches. Effective drainage can also go a long way toward preventing potholes.

Property managers shouldn't just take care of the snow--they should use salt or ice melt as necessary to keep sidewalks and parking lots free from ice. They need to be careful to treat spots where the sun melts the snow during the day. If those spots freeze at night, they can be especially slick. Chopping or melting all ice will help prevent slippery surfaces.

The surface of sidewalks and parking lots needs to be properly maintained. Holes, cracks and drop-offs should be fixed immediately. Also, sidewalks must be kept clear of debris and clutter and paths should be cleared to at least three feet in width.

While it is impossible to control the weather, business owners can be prepared to keep their property safe--safe for themselves and safe for their customers.
